Jack and his family operated a meat market or what some would call a butcher shop where my parents would shop when I was Kid

Jackie D. “Jack” Gommel, Sr., 81, passed away on Tuesday evening, August 29, 2017, at his residence.

He was born on September 18, 1935, in Hartsville, IN, the son of Olin and Jessie F. (Hart)

Gommel and graduated from Columbus High School in 1955. On June 11, 1961, in Canaan, IN, he married Mary A. Konkle.

Jack owned and operated Gommel’s Meat Market for 30 years and worked for Marsh for 10 years until his retirement 2007. He was a member of Avondale United Methodist Church, Delaware Masonic Lodge #46 and was on the board of directors of the Muncie Mission. After retirement, Jack worked for The Meeks Mortuary.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren, watching sports – especially the Cincinnati Reds and IU, loved to entertain and spent countless hours doing community service work.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary A. Gommel of Muncie; two sons, Timothy R. Gommel (wife, Vickie) of Yorktown and Brian A. Gommel (Melissa Overton) of Muncie; six grandchildren, Jamie Tapley (husband, Jon), Chasity Evans (husband, Adam), Craig Gommel (wife, April), Amy Gommel (Bob Jessie), Austin Gommel and Isaac Overton; ten great-grandchildren, Owen, Rylan, Madeline, Gracie, Hayden, Parker, Kaylee, Kinslee, Elijah and Caleb; two sisters-in-law, Mary Gommel of Greensburg and Helena Gommel of Franklin; two brothers-in-law, Marvin Finke (wife, Pauline) of Columbus and Bill Konkle (wife, Mary) of Greensburg; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jackie D. Gommel, Jr.; five brothers, Earl, Harold, Warren, Watson and Ray Gommel; three sisters, Esther Easley, Ethel Beard and Helen Finke; two brothers-in-law, Charles Konkle and Glenford Horine; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Konkle and Margaret Horine.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2017, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2017 at Garland Brook Cemetery, 501 N. Gladstone Avenue, Columbus, IN.
